Does anyone remember what Enner Valencia said when asked what he knew about West Ham United, upon signing back in 2014? Anyone? I’ll remind you!
“I knew about West Ham mainly from watching films,” he says. “And I know the supporters were very passionate.”
The film Enner was referring to was none other than Green Street Hooligans, the tale of a spirited American journo, Elijah Wood, who unknowingly infiltrates an underground gang of East London football misfits after getting kicked out of university.
Alright so maybe we can’t expect every player who joins the Hammer ranks to know who Bobby Moore or Paolo Di Canio are but it’s still hilarious that Enner’s only notion of West Ham prior to joining the team was Elijah Wood.
Hopefully, Valencia does a little more research on Mexico’s Tigres, as he is set to be moving there for a reported fee of £5m. A far cry from the £12m it took to sign the Ecuadorian from Pachuca. It would be worth the loss to get Valencia’s £40,000 salary off the ledger.
Enner has been less than impressive these past few years. With West Ham alone, he’s amassed 10 goals in 66 appearances. While on loan at Everton last season, he splashed the net just 3 times in almost 30 appearances.
So when Everton had the opportunity to buy out Enner’s loan last month - they balked.
Slaven Bilic and David Sullivan are working tirelessly to bring in a first choice striker to West Ham, a clear sign Enner has no place in the envisioned future. Though, it became obvious two years ago Velancia had no future with West Ham United. This parting will be more than amicable.
Joining Liga MX will give Valencia an opportunity to reignite his petering career. It’s an opportunity to play first team football while also being closer to his native Ecuador.
Expect a team announcement shortly.
