West Ham Have Handed Chelsea the Premier League Title

Mixed feelings about beating our big rivals to help Chelsea win the championship

In case you’ve been under a rock for the past few days, West Ham beat rivals Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 to all but end the latter’s hopes of capturing the Premier League title. After Friday’s result, Chelsea needed just two more wins to lock up the title, something they could achieve before Spurs next kick a ball.

The Blues kept up their end of the bargain with a convincing 3-0 win over Middlesbrough on Monday night; a defeat which condemned Boro back to the Championship after just one season back in the top tier. Chelsea face West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Friday evening, in what looks certain to be another easy victory.

Chelsea have been an unstoppable force this season, a good example of the success of their system can be seen in the transformation of Victor Moses. This time last year, Moses was on the bench for West Ham’s historic victory at the last game at Upton Park, now he’s a crucial component of their championship campaign. What a difference a year makes!

It does feel strange being happy that London-rivals Chelsea are storming to the title thanks to help from West Ham United; but the alternative was continuing to entertain more delusions of Spurs taking the trophy. On behalf of every Hammer who has to frequently interact with Tottenham fans and entertain these wild flights of fancy – this is unacceptable.

If the spuds had won the title there would be no escape from the constant stream of back patting and gloating. It would have been a disaster of unmitigated proportions. Chelsea have one hand on the trophy and that suits me just fine. We can go on with our lives safe in the knowledge that Tottenham fans have crumbled in the FA Cup Semi Final and in the title hunt. Let’s just hope that the next step is that the big boys sign all of their players.
