The England squad for their World Cup Qualifier against Scotland and friendly against France was announced today. West Ham left back Aaron Cresswell was called up to Gareth Southgate’s team.

The Hammers’ defender had a lackluster season after a breakthrough season a year ago. Cresswell is the only Hammer representing the Three Lions this go around. Michail Antonio who has yet to make his England debut is currently recovering from a hamstring injury.

Southgate said the upcoming fixtures are a good challenge for a team filled with young players.

“The Scotland game is one of football’s great fixtures,” he told TheFA.com “We’re in a place in the group where a win can really put us in a very strong position, and that’s what we want to achieve. France is a great challenge for us... a game away in the Stade de France will be a brilliant occasion for the players.”

Former Hammer Jermain Defoe is in the squad as is potential Hammer’s target Joe Hart.

Cresswell will likely get some playing time for England with Ryan Bertrand as the other left back on the team. Cresswell’s last England call up saw him play 11 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Spain in a friendly.
